Educating for Sustainability and Well-Being: An Exploration of Promising Practices and Challenges


The Education for Sustainable Well-Being Research Group would like to thank the University of Manitoba's Faculty of Education and the Canadian Society for the Study of Education for their financial support of this conference.
Time and Place
The conference was held on Saturday, 22nd November 2014 at the Faculty of Education, University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, Canada.

Keynote Presenter - AM 
Picture
Niigaanwewidam James Sinclair is Anishinaabe, originally from St. Peter’s (Little Peguis) Indian Settlement near Selkirk, Manitoba. He is an international commentator on Indigenous issues for outlets like Al-Jazeera, The Guardian, and national broadcasters like CTV, CBC, and The Globe and Mail. He is a co-editor of the award-winning Manitowapow: Aboriginal Writings from the Land of Water (Highwater Press, 2011), Centering Anishinaabeg Studies: Understanding the World Through Stories (Michigan State University Press, 2013) and The Winter We Danced: Voices of the Past, the Future, and the Idle No More Movement (Arbeiter Ring Press, 2014). Currently at the University of Manitoba, Niigaan teaches courses in Indigenous literatures, cultures, histories, and politics. 

Keynote Presenter - PM

Dr. Hilary Inwood leads the Environmental and Sustainability Education Initiative and teaches in the Teacher Education programs at the Ontario Institute of Studies in Education at the University of Toronto.  She is currently collaborating with other Ontario faculty to deepen the praxis of environmental education in pre-service programs across the province.  Her research focuses on the professional development of teachers in environmental and sustainability education, as well as on integrating art education with environmental education to develop learners’ environmental literacy in school and community settings.  Her work as an educator, artist and researcher extends beyond the classroom to include school gardens, outdoor education centres, parks and galleries.

There were several discussion papers presented and organized around sub-topics of the theme of the conference Education for Sustainability and Well-Being: An Exploration of Promising Practices and Challenges. The discussion papers were presented in a round-table format with opportunities for interactive discussions.
